Global Markets:
Asian stocks experienced an uptick on Thursday following announcements from U.S. technology companies regarding substantial capital expenditure plans, which are expected to positively impact chip manufacturers in the region. However, the escalating conflict in the Middle East has driven oil prices to their highest levels in six weeks. Rising oil prices have reignited inflationary concerns, leading to short-term U.S. Treasury yields reaching 17-week highs as traders speculate that the Federal Reserve may need to increase interest rates sooner rather than later.
Brent crude futures increased by 2% to $96 per barrel in early trading following the U.S. initiation of a new series of strikes on Iran, coupled with Yemen’s Houthis targeting oil tankers in the Red Sea. This escalation has broadened the conflict’s impact, casting a shadow over global markets. Nearly five months of conflict have drained global reserves and heightened inflation across the globe, with experts cautioning that the closure of both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb in the Red Sea would impede shipping routes for over a quarter of the world’s oil and gas. Overnight in the US, the S&P 500 concluded Wednesday marginally below the flatline, influenced by an increase in oil prices, as investors anticipated another active day of corporate earnings.
The broad market index declined by 0.14%, concluding at 7,498.96, whereas the Nasdaq Composite experienced a decrease of 0.57%, finishing at 25,690.90. The Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a decline of 6.06 points, representing a decrease of 0.01%, concluding the trading session at 52,218.58. Alphabet shares declined by 3% in after-hours trading following the announcement that the parent company of Google has raised its forecast for capital expenditures in 2026 to a maximum of $205 billion, citing robust demand for artificial intelligence. The increase comes as investors have become increasingly cautious in recent months regarding the spending of hyperscalers on AI initiatives.
Domestic Market:
Key equity benchmarks extended their losses for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, with the Nifty closing beneath the 24,000 threshold. Weakness was driven by increasing crude oil prices, a significant depreciation in the rupee, and profit-taking in major stocks. Broader indices continued to face downward pressure. Sectorally, the decline was predominantly driven by pharmaceuticals, banking, and information technology stocks, whereas the fast-moving consumer goods and automotive sectors exhibited resilience against this trend.
Bandhan Bank experienced a significant decline of 16% following a conservative outlook from management. The S&P BSE Sensex experienced a decline of 715.06 points, equivalent to 0.92%, closing at 76,755.05. The Nifty 50 index experienced a decline of 191.45 points, representing a decrease of 0.79%, closing at 23,996.25. Over the course of three consecutive sessions, the Sensex has experienced a decline of 1.78%, whereas the Nifty has decreased by 1.38%.
