Global Markets:

Asian equities experienced a significant decline on Thursday, as a sell-off in technology stocks cascaded from Wall Street to regional markets. South Korea’s Kospi experienced a significant decline of 7.1%, closing at 5,584.83, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped by 3.9% to 65,119.51, driven primarily by losses in semiconductor stocks. The sell-off ensued after declines in US technology stocks, as inflation data that exceeded expectations intensified worries regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate trajectory. Investors exhibited caution regarding the escalating competition within the semiconductor sector, particularly in light of reports detailing advancements by Chinese memory-chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies.

This development has sparked apprehensions about possible pricing pressures in the global memory-chip market. US equities concluded the trading session on Wednesday with a downward trajectory, primarily driven by a significant pullback in technology stocks. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.88% to 26,692.87, while the S&P 500 fell 1.11% to 7,718.94. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.09% to 51,621.48. The declines followed the release of US inflation data indicating that the Consumer Price Index increased by 0.6% in September compared to August and 3.7% on a year-over-year basis, as reported by the US Bureau of Labour Statistics.

Annual inflation increased from 3.4% in August, surpassing market expectations. Higher fuel costs played a substantial role in the monthly increase, as petrol prices surged by 9.1% in September. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose by 0.3% on a month-over-month basis and 2.6% on a year-over-year basis. The inflation data heightened concerns that persistent price pressures could prompt the Federal Reserve to maintain a tighter monetary policy stance or consider further interest rate increases.

Domestic Market:

The key equity benchmarks concluded the trading session on Wednesday with a decline, influenced by ongoing foreign institutional investor selling, high crude oil prices, and unfavourable global indicators that dampened market sentiment. Concerns regarding escalating domestic inflation and persistent geopolitical tensions contributed to a prevailing sense of caution. The Nifty 50 concluded its trading session beneath the 22,650 threshold.

Pharmaceutical and healthcare equities experienced a notable downturn, whereas shares in the FMCG, IT, and oil & gas sectors saw an upward trajectory. The S&P BSE Sensex experienced a decrease of 251.89 points, reflecting a decline of 0.34%, closing at 72,781.99. The Nifty 50 index experienced a decline of 99.25 points, representing a decrease of 0.44%, closing at 22,622.70.
