Global Markets:

Asian markets exhibited a mixed performance on Wednesday as investors anticipated a significant US inflation report, which is expected to influence the short-term trajectory of interest rates. A surprisingly robust inflation report is poised to unsettle investors who anticipate it will influence the Federal Reserve’s decisions at its September meeting, particularly as policymakers take a pause in August. The central bank has been acutely attentive to the effects of increasing price pressures on the U.S. consumer, as evidenced by the three dissenters at the most recent meeting who voted in favour of raising rates. Concerns persist, as U.S. oil prices have surged past $83 a barrel this week, coinciding with diminishing hopes for a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Wednesday’s inflation report will not be the final obstacle the stock market must navigate this week. The upcoming July producer price index, set for release on Thursday, must demonstrate that the previous month’s subdued report can be replicated. Overnight on Wall Street, the S&P 500 experienced a decline on Tuesday, weighed down by significant technology stocks. Investor optimism regarding the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz diminished, intensifying existing uncertainties about the prospects for a comprehensive resolution between the U.S. and Iran concerning the ongoing conflict. The broad market index experienced a decline of 0.32%, marking its second consecutive day of losses, and concluded at 7,728.20. The Nasdaq Composite experienced a decline of 0.60%, closing at 26,445.45. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 184.13 points, representing a decrease of 0.34%, concluding at 53,791.85.

The moves come as oil prices have increased in response to the prevailing uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict. Reports indicate that the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has reiterated that the strait will remain closed until specific conditions are fulfilled. The U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures concluded the trading session with an increase of 1.3%, settling at $83.20 per barrel. International benchmark Brent crude experienced an increase of approximately 1.4%, concluding the day at $88.91 per barrel yesterday.

Domestic Market:

Key benchmark indices concluded the trading session on Tuesday with a decline, as escalating crude oil prices and a resurgence of geopolitical uncertainty exerted pressure on investor sentiment. Oil prices approached the $90-a-barrel threshold as optimism regarding a US-Iran peace agreement diminished, heightening apprehensions about India’s import expenses, inflationary pressures, and corporate profit margins. Weak global market signals contributed to the mounting pressure.

The Nifty concluded the trading session beneath the 24,500 threshold, influenced by a downturn in FMCG and metal equities, whereas pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks experienced a surge in buying activity. The S&P BSE Sensex experienced a decrease of 388.19 points, representing a decline of 0.49%, closing at 78,154.25. The Nifty 50 index experienced a decline of 112.10 points, representing a decrease of 0.46%, closing at 24,471.70.
